Abigail Tarttelin is a young English actress with an international body of work. Her first film, Philip Pullman's The Butterfly Tattoo, won Best Director and Best Adaptation at the New York Independent Film and Video Festival, and is out April 17th in selected US cinemas. Indie sci-fi Schrodinger's Girl, which showcases Abigail's first leading role in a feature film, stopped off at the Berlin Market on its current tour of the festival circuit. Abigail is also a talented stage actress, with many leading roles including Shakespeare's Juliet, Katharina in Taming of the Shrew, Abigail in The Crucible, Gail in Godber's Teechers and Alison in John Osbourne's Look Back in Anger.
Abigail trained with the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, taking the lead role in their Easter 2007 Season opener at the Lowry in Manchester, England. As a student Abigail excelled academically: she gained 5 A Grade A Levels and was selected to be one of the first 100 of Britain's National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth members, attending its coveted Drama course, after a rigorous selection process in 2002.
Upon leaving school, she studied in Paris for The New York Film Academy's 'Acting for Film' Diploma, graduating in 2006. Whilst in Paris Abigail shot for many artistic and experimental films, many made by students from the New York Film Academy and La Femis, the National French Film School.
Abigail appeared in her first feature film in 2007, filming for Philip Pullman's The Butterfly Tattoo in Oxford as supporting character Fenella. Less than six months later she was awarded her first lead role in a feature film, playing Rebecca, Sarah and Anatasia in indie sci-fi action adventure Schrodinger's Girl.
Abigail has since shot as the lead female role for independent feature drama Denouement with James Aubrey (Peter Brook's Lord of the Flies), the surreal short film Ed & Rose as the title character, and for Adrift as the charismatic Maki, alongside Geoffrey Beevers (The Edge of Love) as lead role Bill.
Philip Pullman's The Butterfly Tattoo is in US cinemas from April 17th 2009. Schrodinger's Girl is currently touring festivals.
